West Virginia Income Tax Filing Season 2025

The Internal Revenue Service announced that they will start accepting income tax returns Monday, January 26, 2026.

The West Virginia Tax Division will also open its tax season on Monday, January 26, 2026, and will begin accepting income tax returns for tax year 2025 or completed filing extension requests (WV4868).

The close of the filing season for both the Internal Revenue Service and the West Virginia Tax Division will be Wednesday, April 15, 2026, unless you have completed a WV4868 Application for Extension of Time to File.

The request for an extension to file must also be submitted by Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Thursday, October 15, 2026 to file.

Please note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Payments must still be made by April 15, 2026.

Income Tax Credits for Property Taxes Paid

Eligible taxpayers must still file a tax return, or, if eligible, use the MyTaxes filing portal to receive a refund for their property taxes timely paid.

Taxpayers will be able to claim their eligible amounts on Line 21 of their IT-140.

For more information about these property tax credits, please visit our Income Tax Credits for Property Taxes Paid web page.

File Electronically and Choose Direct Deposit.

The IRS and the West Virginia Tax Division urge taxpayers and tax professionals to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return.

If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2025 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Note: To avoid delays in processing, taxpayers and tax professionals should avoid filing paper returns wherever possible.

Some returns, filed electronically or on paper, may need manual review, which can delay processing. Some situations require us to correspond with taxpayers, while others do not.

If the West Virginia Tax Division reaches out to you about your return, please respond as soon as possible with any requested documentation to help in the processing of your return.

Tips to Make Filing Easier

To avoid processing delays and to speed the issuance of any refund, the Tax Division urges people to follow these five steps:

  1. Check the Tax Division Website for the latest tax information.
    • Organize and gather 2025 tax records including:
    • Social Security numbers,
    • Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers,
    • Adoption Taxpayer Identification Numbers, and
    • This year's Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers valid for calendar year 2026.
  2. Use a bank account, prepaid debit card or mobile app to use direct deposit. Taxpayers will need to provide routing and account numbers.
  3. Make final estimated tax payments for 2025 by Thursday, January 15, 2026, to help avoid a possible assessment for taxes owed and penalties.
  4. Set up an account, or log in securely, at the MyTaxes Website to access personal tax account information including balance, payments, and tax records including adjusted gross income.
