West Virginia Income Tax Filing Season 2023

The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation's tax season will start on Monday, January 29, 2024, and will begin accepting 2023 income tax returns on that day. The West Virginia Tax Division will open its tax season the same day - Monday, January 29, 2024 and will begin accepting 2023 income tax returns.

April 15th is the Filing Deadline for Personal Income Tax 

The filing deadline to submit 2023 tax returns and pay the tax owed is Monday, April 15, 2024 to match the date the federal income tax return is due. A request for an extension to file must also be submitted by April 15, 2024.   

Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Tuesday, October 15, 2024, to file.  

Please note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Payments must still be made by April 15, 2024.

File Electronically and Choose Direct Deposit. 

The IRS and the West Virginia Tax Division urge taxpayers and tax professionals to file electronically with direct deposit information as soon as they have everything they need to file an accurate return. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review that may slow the tax refund. Having all information available when preparing the 2023 tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing.

Note: To avoid delays in processing, taxpayers and tax professionals should avoid filing paper returns wherever possible. 

Some returns, filed electronically or on paper, may need manual review, which can delay processing. Some situations require us to correspond with taxpayers, while others do not. If the West Virginia Tax Division reaches out to you about your return, please respond as soon as possible with any requested documentation to help in the processing of your return.

Tips to Make Filing Easier 

To avoid processing delays and to speed the issuance of any refund, the Tax Division urges people to follow these five steps: 

  1. Check the Tax Division Website for the latest tax information.
  2. Organize and gather 2023 tax records including Social Security numbers, Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, Adoption Taxpayer Identification Numbers, and this year's Identity Protection Personal Identification Numbers valid for calendar year 2024.
  3. Use a bank account, prepaid debit card or mobile app to use direct deposit. Taxpayers will need to provide routing and account numbers.
  4. Make final estimated tax payments for 2023 by Tuesday, January 16, 2024, to help avoid a possible assessment for taxes owed and penalties. 
  5. Set up or log in securely at  MyTaxes.WVTax.Gov to access personal tax account information including balance, payments, and tax records including adjusted gross income.

Key Filing Season Dates 

There are important dates taxpayers should keep in mind for this year's filing season:

  • January 16: Final day to pay the fourth quarter estimated tax payment for Tax year 2023.
  • January 29: West Virginia begins 2024 tax season. The West Virginia Tax Division will begin accepting individual 2023 tax returns on this date.  
  • April 15: Final day to file a 2023 tax return, request an extension, and pay tax owed.
  • October 15: Final day to file 2023 tax returns with approved extension.
