Application Process: Information For Job Seekers
The State Tax Division’s primary mission is to diligently collect and accurately assess taxes due to the State of West Virginia in support of State services and programs. Tax endeavors to garner the confidence of taxpayers in our ability to fairly administer tax laws while doing the utmost possible to secure and protect their data.
Why Work at Tax?
We Fund Government
The West Virginia State Tax Division is a critical cog in the government machine. It is through the efforts of our professional and dedicated staff that we are able to collect the financial resources that ensure government agencies can operate. We are unique in that we generate significantly more revenue than we expend to collect it. In fact, last year, we collected $164 for every $1 we spent.
We are a good investment!
We are a government agency that collects far more than we expend, which, in the private sector would be a “profit.” However, our “profit” is used to pave roads, build schools and support other primary and secondary education programs, fund things like Medicaid, the State Police, Corrections, Tourism, and almost every state employee’s salary, benefits, and the retirement system, just to name a few.
Real. Important. Work.
Our work is critical and without us, other agencies cannot do their jobs. So, we take our jobs seriously, but, we also like to have a good time. We firmly believe that if you enjoy working you are more productive, more engaged, and more likely to build a career with us. The work here can be stimulating and fulfilling but also complex, mentally challenging, and demanding. We encourage our staff to have a good work life balance, take breaks when you need them, and will work with you on real life challenges, both inside and outside the workplace. We are not afraid of hard work, but we also believe in working smarter, not just harder.
