Tax endeavors to garner the confidence of taxpayers in our ability to fairly administer tax laws while doing the utmost possible to secure and protect their data.

Why Work at Tax?

  • We support the state’s financial health and are a critical part of ensuring state government can function by collecting taxes due and routing deposits to the appropriate accounts.
  • We ensure the playing field is fair and level for all individuals and businesses through an in-depth audit program and utilization of an enhanced enforcement program.
  • We provide education and support for individuals and businesses who are struggling to meet their tax obligations, as well as those who are considering new business opportunities.
  • We have flexible work hours, alternative workweeks, field and office-based positions, generous leave policies, an environment committed to personal and professional development, ongoing rehabilitation efforts for physical workspaces and buildings, updated technology and software platforms, and many opportunities for cross-training and learning new skills.
  • We are an organization on the rise and want you to join our growing team!

We Fund Government

The West Virginia State Tax Division is a critical cog in the government machine. It is through the efforts of our professional and dedicated staff that we are able to collect the financial resources that ensure government agencies can operate. We are unique in that we generate significantly more revenue than we expend to collect it. In fact, last year, we collected $164 for every $1 we spent.

We are a good investment!

We are a government agency that collects far more than we expend, which, in the private sector would be a “profit.” However, our “profit” is used to pave roads, build schools and support other primary and secondary education programs, fund things like Medicaid, the State Police, Corrections, Tourism, and almost every state employee’s salary, benefits, and the retirement system, just to name a few.

Real. Important. Work.

Our work is critical and without us, other agencies cannot do their jobs. So, we take our jobs seriously, but, we also like to have a good time. We firmly believe that if you enjoy working you are more productive, more engaged, and more likely to build a career with us. The work here can be stimulating and fulfilling but also complex, mentally challenging, and demanding. We encourage our staff to have a good work life balance, take breaks when you need them, and will work with you on real life challenges, both inside and outside the workplace. We are not afraid of hard work, but we also believe in working smarter, not just harder.
